week 27 monday 16th march

Harry's dad in hospital, so this weekend was unfortunately not very productive work wise. but I'm here for my 10'0'clock PPD1 briefing thing. we just had to research about some jobs in the industry which was quite interesting. Daisy and i looked into visual merchandising, and we had to produce a little presentation, i learnt quite alot..i like the idea of doing window display things. we were also told about fashion buyers (correctly described as Rachel from friends) high street fashion designers and garment technologists.
the visual merchandising seemed quite interesting, they promote products and services form other businesses. so mainly window display types of things. they have to decided things like props and lighting. the visual merchandiser also has to have an understanding of what they are trying to sell and draw attention too. about 30-40 hours a week, and perhaps additional hours towards deadlines. salaries can range from 10,000 to 50,000 and more. they must have an understanding for space and design. this look like an interesting job and could be very creative but most of the time it can involve flat pack displays and putting them up as directed. boutiques would be one of the few places where someone was allowed to show there true flare for the style of window display.
high street fashion designers would normally be given a brief to work to which limits creativity, they have to analyse trends and develop a range which compliments other garments on the market. beginning at about £14,000 and working up to about 150,000, if you designing for the big brands. a good point is that you can become a freelance designer from it, and it allows you to travel. however you have a very competitive job, with long working hours and a high threat of copyright.
fashion buyers select ranges and communicate wit suppliers, and they are always 6 months ahead of themselves. they look for the next trends and usually buy for a specific store. the salary at admin level begin at about £12,000 but the head of buyers can begin at about £90,000. the hours can be average with 8-30 till 6-30 but when it comes to closing dates for deadlines it can be 6-6. these hours are very unsociable when busy, and the job can be highly criticised when things don't sell, but there are plus points of lots of travel, and job satisfaction.
a garment technologist has to be a perfectionist. there job is to suggest design faults and to make alterations that other people did not see. talking about things like the price and style of the garment and whether the fabrics are the right kind for the job. beginning on about £15,000 and the senior technologists are on about £50,000 at 38hrs a week. there next job could be a specialising freelance designer. it has many good points such as a chance to travel and work with many people, but there are bad points of a lack of creativity, and working to someone Else's design.

week 26 monday 9th march

back in Leeds after being home for the weekend. and its not my crit with Joanna this week but Adele text me and asked if she could swap, so instead of being next week at half five. I'm today at four i do have some things to ask her at least. so ill be off to that now. well by the look of it none else planned on turning up at all. i think the crit went really well we talked about what i was going to do and she gave me loads of pointers about the entire thing and some more people to look at which would be able to help bulk out my essay but she was quite happy with what i had done already, even thought i was just a few notes. i also like that we can add in quotes from fictional books as in other peoples general thought about it in the context of the book which is good, this would also make the essay more interesting to write. Annas birthday tonight, and then a 9'0 clock start tomorrow fun fun fun. an interdisciplinery module briefing that lasted all of 30 mins..why couldnt they have done it at ten, or 12...not nine!! right well doign some work then goign home for my doctors appt on wednesdya so i can drive back up again after my docs appt. well i did it i drove back on my own to home without my tom tom, and i have driven back again to leeds for my 1'o'clock lesson and i was on time!

week 25..monday 2nd march- fri 6th

hmm, i got the book out from the library that i have to read about..David kunzle, its not as good as Kathleen Tessaro or Jodi Picoult but it'll do. must not forget the meeting we have with joanna next week or the week after. i think the corset question will definitely be the best one for me to do, as i will find it more interesting and therefore it'll hopefully be better. no promises. independent study again today (Tuesday) not going very well its not so much that i have hit a wall but compared to what everyone else is doing i think mine is pretty bland i like it, it gets straight to the point but its not brill. the mini meeting we had last week summed up that i hadn't explained what i wanted to do very well which confused people. so never mind i just need to get it sorted decided what I'm doing and get on with it. and to top it off i need to hand my millinery work in on Thursday. yes its all finished apart form the design board which shouldn't take too long to do. i could have spent more time on it but it is only an elective and although it was interesting i don't think it is something i will be doing again..maybe jewellery. Wednesday the 4Th thought i had the photography thing today but i don't and I'm in anyway so it makes no difference. Thursday hand in the millinery work and then back home for my hair appointment yay!

week 24 monday 23rd feb--

Monday was a good day critical studies went as usual. i have decided which question i will be doing for the essay to be handed in on 3-.3.2009 so i can start that at least when I'm bored. Tuesday was an independent study day which basically means i was working at halls. thinking of things to do for my fashion and culture piece. its going OK at the moment but i don't think this project is going to be something that i will enjoy alot. i just need to knuckle down.
