monday 7th-fri 11th december

enterprise presentation with Angie, it went reasonably well. but it could have gone better. I'm quite impressed considering some bits of it were left until last minute. i think the actual presentation show that more with me as i script read which is a really bad habit i need to get out of. apart from that just checking figures, and planning and getting more information to present next time. the project we are doing at the moment is going well. some of my work has been left at the Yorkshire playhouse but i can go and pick it up at some point this week. i was not too sure whether i would enjoy the tailoring project as it all seems a bit fiddly. but i really like it. learning how to sew a button on again was a little tedious. but learning how to put in a sleeve and pad a lapel thingy was really interesting. I'm a little disappointed that Hugo was not available to help us with some of the machines as he knows the most about them.
(7 days until hand in)
i need to sort out also what I'm going to do about the new brief as I'm more than sure come January i will be missing something important as ill be having a week off. i need to get more work done over the Christmas period so when i come back i will not be as stressed.

tuesday 1st december

change of plan, critical studies seminar...and lecture thingy with tom, then home, i have a chest infection great. at least i can do some work at home.

Thursday 3 December 2009

monday 30th november (christmas soon)

well last week was the end of our taught time with Angie, Hugo, Lynn and Andrew on tailoring, so from now on we are expected to continue the work on our own. and have it completed for the week commencing Monday the 14Th of December.
as always we have our enterprise lecture with Bridget, and i do like to take lots of notes. but i found this lesson a little dull as the first part was new and use full to know, but the second part which lasted at least 45 minutes was a catch-up for the last 5 sessions. which to be honest is a bit of an insult for those that have attended and then had to sit thought it again. my enterprise group which are creating the swapsie daisy clothing web-site have a presentation on Monday the seventh. so during this week we will be working out business strategies and ideas about swot and pest from our enterprise lectures. obviously i will also be continuing to do work for the tailoring module.

monday 23rd november

my mission this week is to go to the play house and pick up my sketch book! Tuesday was another thrilling critical studies lesson, i really do enjoy critical studies but some days i just want to throttle the lecturer.

my session schedule tells me i should be doing piping this Wednesdays, and considering that in my last module my group and i will have done more piping than most tailors and fashion students would have done in their entire lives, I'm not sure its totally necessary for me to listen but Hugo has promised me he will show me something new.

and as always hugo is telling the truth, it was intesrting, i enjoyed it, piping is not just annoying. we were looking at pulling piping, making it thick, layering piping and lots of other things. so surprisingly i have enjoyed it!

thursday was padding, now i cant wuite get the hang of this, im ok with the sticthing, but, mine seems to curl too much, its used a a revere for a lapel on a mans jacket, so i will have to do that again in my own time. throught these workshop sessions, we are designing from our samples, and it is going ok.

friday 'MISSING----ONE HUGO' if found please retrurn to LCAD.
today is our workshop on shoulder paddings and how to make a a basic half jacket. charlotte and i were especially early today... uni is very quiet at 8-15. being early meant angie shoved us in the first making session with andrew that was supposed to be with hugo. i was very impressed that after we had the session with andrew without too much difficulty i was able to make my half jacket sample. it went well!

monday 16th novemeber

Bridget...
critical studies...morning, evening

so after my trip to London, i thought i had got loads of really good shop report research- turns out, maybe not. so having picked up the brief last week, i needed to go over and re-do some bits and pieces ready for this Wednesday. as Angie wanted to see what we had been doing during our independent study time. having seen Angie on the Wednesday, i was doing things the way she wanted them in first year slightly more artistic, this year Angie wanted us to concentrate on flats, design details, fastening and imagine how the garments were put together, and what the difference was between the market levels; so i would have to go back and add more. but the rest of Wednesday was really good, we had Hugo teaching us how to use the button hole machines again and giving us an introduction too the bar tack machine and other bits and pieces of machinery. it seemed quite simple initially learning how to sew buttons on professionally but making a buttonhole by hand is difficult, really really difficult, and i will hopefully never have to do it again.
on Thursday we visited the west Yorkshire play house, it was really interesting. being able to see all the different style, shaped collars cuffs and tailoring details really sparked some ideas as to what i could be producing. but on the other hand i managed to leave my sketch book at the play house so will have to go and pick that up another day.
Friday began with an introduction do designing from samples. so we were learning how to design a garment or part of a garment involving button holes and all the different interesting things that can be done with button holes. during the afternoon we were deconstructing a jacket. I had picked up a woman's jacket and this was no way near as interesting as a mans jacket. during the lesson we were drawing details about the jackets and Angie was right, by making us draw the jackets and not just take pictures of them; we all actually paid more attention to the detail and have a better understanding of how a jackets is put together from it.

monday 9th novemeber

so much for a week of private study. tuesday morning lecture for critical studies, followed by the afternoon session, at opposite ends of the day, great planning from the college. wednesday a mac induction, not totally necessary but a little bit of a reminder of how to shout for help when one isn't doing what i want it too. and then wednesday evening was spent finishing off my millinery elective. and below is my exceptionally sculpural hat/fascinator. i am happy with what i made and i think there area few design flaws but given that i did not sign on to do millinery again and that i am using totally different materials to last time, i am impressed with my results. my research and designs are not fantastic and i probably should have spent more time concentrating on them instead of looking at the application of design brief, but never mind, its over as of thursday when i handed it in. on friday with angie i had a tutorial meeting with angie about my application of design hand in, but unfortunaly she was ill, a little sigh of relief for a much needed lie in, during a week that was supposed to be reasonably free and flexible.

5th novemeber 09 the end of application of design

my final line up for the miu miu project...... it was worked into more on photoshop
an illustration i used for my final line up one of the 4 close up design drawings we had to produce, this is the design sheet for my skirt

so the application of design project is done....i think i will have done well, but i know my presentation skills will have let me down. thanks to a hospital appointment i will not be able to attend the briefing on Friday the 6Th for the new project but Angie has given me a brief outline on what i will need to start looking at until i can pick the brief up next week. tailoring. i will be looking at tailoring, and as I'm going to London this weekend it should make beginning research for this project easy. oh and i still need to finish my millinery project, but there area few things i need to finish it and i can pick them up whilst I'm down there. and seeing as we are supposed ti have some private study time next week it should be easy to get everything done.

Wednesday 4 November 2009

2nd novemeber

these are some images from ym look book for the miu miu prject..... i like what i did but i think for my third year look book there are alterations i now know i need to make
enterprise lecture at nine but the lecturer Bridget said we could go anytime so i decided to make the most of my time before the brief and go on Thursday morning. i stayed in all Monday and Tuesday preparing for the final hand in on Wednesday at nine and then the presentation on Wednesday afternoon. it infuriated me that some of the people in our class had been given extensions with the lame excuses such as i have had a cold. we all had cold, some of us even had flu and it was unfair that we were not all given an extension.
this is one of the pages from my look book..... this is the skirt i made in flat.
i was reasonably happy with the work i produced over the last month, and i found that i had completed a lot that i thought i wouldn't be able too. i was not happy with the presentation, i really do not enjoy public speaking, i do not mind performing in pantomimes or any of that stuff, but as soon as we had to stand up and perform the presentation, i needed to read off my Que cards which i hadn't needed before and this ruined most of my section of the presentation.

on the Tuesday before we had the presentation, we had critical studies. it was unsurprising that most the of the people on the course did not turn up. i on the other hand went, i collected my brief from tom palin my new lecturer and i rather enjoyed the lecture. it was only an hour, and I'm looking forward to my next lecture.

after i have done all this..... in the last month i feel shattered. i really do not want to be working again like this- this is one of my initial resaerch pages that i did over the summer

26th october reading week...elective millinery

last year i really enjoyed my millinery elective and having already had the brief we knew what we were doing. during the first 20 Min's of the session even though i had already planned to do the plundering the past section of the brief i decided to switch to super sculptures i as i found this more interesting once i had begun researching it.

my research immediately lead me to Stephen Jones, christian Dior and some of the most fascinating buildings ever made such as the new creations in Dubai, and the Eiffel tower. i decided after looking at some very weird German building to create my hat/fascinator out of sinamay. it would be a series of cubes held together somehow on sinamay base. these be built up and would have something inside them to show movement when the wearer moved there head or walked.

during the entire elective which had to be handed on November the 12Th i felt permanently distracted by the short time we had left on the application of design brief.

due to the shirt time we have to complete this brief, im quite impressed by what i managed to get done. howevere i will still need to do some more things to my hat...and my research before i hand it in.

19th october application of design

Monday no enterprise lecture as its every other week.

on Tuesday i had a tutorial with gem ma about my work experience and what i would need to do, i left my CV at home.....which basically made the meeting pointless...my fault entirely.

2 weeks until hand in. this week we were talking about look books, illustrations and presentation techniques.

i was staying at college 9-9 almost every day to try and get this skirt made. the piping which was a design feature for our collection pulled the stretch fabric as i was putting it in, this made my garment out on one side by about an inch. an inch is an awful lot to compensate for and it messed with the vents at the bottom of the skirt which i had pain stakingly put in and the waistband. i had to ask Hugo to help me correct this as i could not see how i could possibly get round it. but we managed and by Thursday evening out of college time i was able to see how my work and the collection would all fit together.
the day sessions were all about planning our collection, what we say during our presentation and creating our look books. my group once again without Jess pike had to decided what we would include in our presentation and we all decided it would be interesting to have a video in our presentation. the video would taken whilst shooting our collection on Friday as this was the only time the room was available. using our college connections we were able to source a photographer and lighting assistant by the name of Dom and jay. the photo shoot and video went really ell and we were all happy with the way it turned out.

this is a link to the video that we made........
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBbvrTVfMhI

we were also glad to get this out of the way as next week we had to do our electives that had been placed right in the middle of one of the most stressful and time consuming projects of the year. nice one.

12th october

Monday our enterprise lecture....9am..... not very happy people kept turning up half way through and we started half an hour late because none had been given the right times!
anyway. the enterprise lecture was all about pest

  • politics

  • economics

  • society

  • technology

and how this all had to be taken very seriously when thinking about where, when and how your setting your business up!

on the whole this was very helpfull as we have our 'creating our business' thing to think about and all this will be helpfull.

for application of design this week we needed to make our garment, this was difficult. i had my flats and i knew what i was going to be making....my skirt.

the difficult part was making the pattern, as i wanted to create a skirt with curved seams i had to take this into consideration when pattern cutting i also had to think about where i would put the zip.....preferably out of sight for this market level and how it would all fit together to hide seams and piping. i made the pattern on Wednesday and i had made the toil bu Thursday afternoon but by trying to hide a side seam i had to completely change part of the pattern and i also had to take into consideration vents. this would allow the wearer to walk in the skirt because it was fitted down the the knees. the fabric i chose was also quite hard to work in and getting the pattern pieces cut right was very difficult. by Friday afternoon when we were supposed to have had our entire garment finished i had some new pattern pieces, after the first skirt bodged. my plan was to stay late all next week in my own time and finish it.

5th october application of design.

beginning the 5Th of October we needed to have some design sheets started based on our group research. this was very difficult as we had only just began our group research and i don't think anyone thought 4 pages would be enough to base an entire collection on. i really enjoy enjoy the design process and i needed to get back into the style of drawing alot of designs. i do enjoy the design process when i exhaust the possibilities by drawing them out. as a group before we began designing we had to decide what each of us wee going to do. as in for our collection someone would need to do day wear and someone would need to do evening wear. as a team we decided that,
  • adele would complete the tailoring aspect of the collection

  • vicky wallace would do casual day wear

  • claire would do evening wear

  • zaianab would do young and edgy

  • and we were unaware as to what jess would do as she was not in.

straight away we decided what we would all be making as we needed to have a collection of 6 garments to create a group line-up. claire dress, zaianab long top, jess jacket, adele trousers, myself a skirt and vicky a jumper/coat.

as a group we were to create flat drawings for our collection and we needed them for next week as we were beginning to make the garments we had not even finished designing yet.

on Thursday we had a group meeting with Angie to discuss what we would be making, we were also talking about fabric and colour choice as this is very important to our collection. after our group meeting, we went to Dewsbury and the market and other fabric stores to see if we could find the fabrics that were missing from our range. we managed to find some very exciting fabrics. with our chosen fabrics picked we were able to finalise what we would be making with angie the next day and our design details that would be suitable. as a team we decided to have satin piping as a design feature.

this work was really beginning to get on top of me already. although i felt i had stayed up to date and we were not as behind as other groups, it was still asking alot that by next Friday we would have our garments made. on the Friday we had a talk about look books, this confused everyone slightly i think. we all know we have a lot to do, so i think it may just be a case of getting on with it, and making the most of college time

these area few design sheets i had done....

beginning our project 28th september

application of design brief regarding our summer work was given on the 28Th of September. from our research, we began getting into our groups and we were told what we have to do. the brief looked quite complicated but i hoped it would make more sense as the week went on. my group was Claire Greendale, zainab, Adele, Vicky wallace and Jess pike. Jess was not there on the first day so we informed her we had been put into our groups and we began on the work, putting together an A2 mood board so we could create four more individual research based on our summer work as a group. to the left hand side of the page is one of the research pages i did based on our group mood board. we decided to look at structured shapes, strong, bold colours, bright flowers and natural shapes. this combined made an interesting mood board and my research after this was more interesting.
from his personal research that was to be completed during the week we were then to begin designing for our group. we needed to design a designer diffusion brand. we needed a name. branding and mission statement to begin designing so we all had an established idea of what to design as a group as we had to make a coherent line that had combining features alongside our own personal line-ups.
as a group we decided to create 'impossible to define' as a designer difussion ine for miu miu we were using a slogan already linked with the brand. all this had been done in one week along side team talks, planning, preparation, and our own personal research. it was beginning to look like this brief would be hell.
we also had our first Enterprise lecture this week, i understand that enterprise is very important to designers and other creatives, and i think the lessons will be really helpful when thinking about business. our first lecture was quite interesting and it gave us a basic insight into what we need to know when thinking about setting up our own business's.

summer work 09

summer work? well we have been given our summer work for the next project and i know from last year that i need to do it before go back otherwise i will be behind before we start.

  • we have to do 4 research pages

  • a mood board based on the information we were given

  • start a fabric file

  • and produce brand research on a designer diffusion level

over the summer i have complete the brand research, i chose to look into see by Chloe, roksanda ilincic's new range for whistles and bcbg, i also looked at Stella Mc Cartney so i could compare the difference. along side my brand research was the designer research on miu miu, i really enjoyed looking into miu miu as its a brand i like for its playful clothing!

the fabric research file was quite difficult to compile and i had to wait until i had time to travel to fabric shops so i could get a wide range of fabrics. i don't know very much about the fabrics so I'm guessing i will have to look into it more.

i don't think the research i completed was as good as the research i was doing all of last year, certain aspects of my work lacked creativity. this is one of my summer research pages

i was more focused on the research aspect of our summer work.

Thursday 4 June 2009

this is an illustration form one of the first projects we did, and i was surprised some of my illustrations... i also liked some of the others but we can only have 15 images. too the right of the illustration os the first photoshop page i have ever made by myself. i felt it was an achievement and had reduced my research cutting and stciking time so i think it is an important piece of work.

being the first thing we made at college, even thought it was only manipulation of garments i
think this is one of my favourire pieces out of everything i have made because its interesting, weird, and i learnt how to use the button hole machine.

considering that i only learnt how to make a hat in 2 days i was very impressed with what i had achieved during this week, and i think the crash course really helped me to realise what i can achieve in one week.

looking back i am really proud of mkaing this dress, i only had the image to work from, and it did take alot of help but i managed to make something based on only what i had seen, it was the first time i had ever made anything like it so it was a turning point for me on this course.
i enjoyed the beginning of the year because i did more drawing for my research and this is one that i particularly liked for the buttoned down gathered up project.

this was my fashion art and cultre final image, i was really happy with this as it took alot of effort to find the right spot to take the photo and to have everything set up just how i wanted it. it was also very difficult to make models do things they dont want to, so in this case i am also proud of my powers of persuasion.
these are examples from my fashion art and culture project..my design sheets have developed and instead of having just drawings i now think about what i have designed and then quickly jot notes down so i can take that into consideration when i develop my designs and this helps me to produce more interesting work.

the market level research was also something i was proud of because it was quite indepth and
had lots of very usefull images.

im really happy with these 4 research and design sheets i think they show how my skills have improved through the year, how im now using samples for research and how i interact more with my research.

i chose this dress form my final interdisciplinary project because i made it using a new technique for me, designed it, and it worked relativly well!

tuesday 4th june

well today i have been helping the third years by modelling and it was fun!!!!!! it was also really good to go in and see what happened during a crit when we did the modelling 2 weeks ago, so i will roughly know in third year how prepared you have to be for the crit of your final line up.

Tuesday 2 June 2009

monday 25th week 37

a very stress-full weekend, which involved taking that dress which wouldn't go back together and i lost a piece fantastic. but i finished making it, Monday today and all i needed to do was over lock the insides, put in the zip and finish off a few bits and pieces, binding and things like that making the front cover. so i'm glad i came in and got things sorted. so Tuesday like Monday was just finishing off day and doing the illustration. i am not happy with my illustration but never mind its not my strong point and i will have to improve it! i have also had to chose my pathway, and b it is. after the meeting on Tuesday morning i decided i would enjoy aspects of both but b would be more suited to me. thursday and of all the days my third year needed me today...a nightmare she overslept, her alarm broke!!! but nick and i got it sorted...we made the stand..sorted the fial block and generally ran around like headless chickens..but it was all worth it. so next week my only third year thing will be to help people model!

monday 18th may 09

after a small amount of stress this is basically the week before the hand in. so i went in to college today and moulaged my garment. i now know what I'm making. i just have to work the pattern out from the moulage which i imagine will be rather difficult so that's my job in college tomorrow. Tuesday was fun, i have to take my moulage apart piece by piece. and lay it all out so that as pattern pieces it worked, and thanks to the scrunched edges of my design, its rather difficult. this is going to be so much fun to put back together, in a new fabric. OK now i have made he pattern its a case of putting it all back together but i need to produce the metamorphosis affect that i wanted on the garment, and this went horribly wrong when i tested it again on the machine, but never mind. so i had to go back to the fabric shop and re-buy the fabric i needed to do the metamorphosis in a different way which to be honest i think will look better now. so i spent all of wednesday night making the metamorphosis section of my dress even thought it would only take an hour, never mind.

monday 11th may 09 week 35

right i have made more design sheets, i'm quite happy with how things are going, so fabric shopping time here we come! i have chosen a blue and white slightly stretchy fabric, which is based on the colours of my research for the 'seaside' i have also chosen a series of cotton candy pink fabrics which are completely out of my comfort zone but apparently this will help me work in new ways. hm. so tonight ill experiment with my fabrics and double check they fit into my research. wich they should as its all the seaside stuff, simmilar to my research page here! i will also be able to take them to college to do some metamorphosis on them!

Tuesday, bad day, well good day depending on how you look at it, a voluntary crit has lead me to believe that i need to basically start again with some design ideas and shapes. so all the design sheets i have done basically needs scraping, but its good as there is no point handing in work that i know isn't up to scratch. right, Wednesday, start again. so my mission today was to make a few more designs, that fitted in with what i had been told yesterday. i have decided moulage is the way forward so i will be doing that. Thursday was good helping the 3rd years it proves what you can learn! i have decided i definitely need to do so much more practical work, maybe make a could of bits and pieces over summer just to remember what we have been doing!

Wednesday 6 May 2009

monday 4th may 09 34

well for this tuesday our research was mean to be well on with way with design sheets, so i have research and i have some design sheets but as many as i would have liked to have so i will have to do more to them, we are also working from our sample sheets that we produced last week. doing the intensive work session thing worked well, i really enjoyed it again but i'm not entirely happy with what i produced. but im glad we did it because if we had been working on our research without a teask i wouldnt have got half as much done so it proves when we put our mind to it we can do alot. i forgot to take a picture of it, but this is it half way through. i did not like the bottom but i though the rest of it worked quite well, and working on the haf scale mannequn was alot easier and quicker. this one is half scale-

today wednesday we were doign a moulage. until today i had no idea what this was but once again i enjoyed it, its really quick and allows you to work on the stand and makes more sense to me than pattern cutting does. its a little difficult when tryign to realise that what you put on the outside actually will go on the inside but it makes more sense once you have taken it off the stand and seen it.

week 33 monday 27th

thank god for the hand in of the fashion art and culture. after doing a vote on facebook i picked the photo that was most relevant to the look of the piece, and which was basically the best. so its all handed in now and im very happy to have it out of the way as it has dragged on for soooooo long, and only for 10 credits. rubbish. this is one of my favourite images that i did not use, and its amazing what daisy will hold if you give her chocolate. yes its a dead bird. we have the metamorphosis thing to hand in tomorrow, and i have done my 15 pages of research but none else has so we can't celebrate being back yet.
so the research we did was necessary otherwise you couldnt really do the work that was required, so now im glad i did it. making the five samples based on the research we did was quite intense. but i enjoyed it. i did not finish it properly because i did not time it right but thats something i can work on tomorrow. so wednesday was just doing what we were doign on tuesday...so we all finished that off. tomorrow we meet our third year!

week 32 monday 20th easter hols

right...i have started the metamorphosis stuff all going well but its taking forever to cut and stick as i havent got the photoshop thing uploaded onto my computer yet. this is one of the pages i have started..taking the biological metamorphosis inspiration i am still not happy with fashion art and culture and although i have quite alot done i ahve not taken my final image...or started makign the final thing. but at least i have my design sheets

so its time to decidewhat i am goign to do. i have asked daisy to come up from dorking to be the model for my image, and i will have to borrow georgys camera as mine was brutally stolen! ah so much to do!
